Centre for Sustainable Development (CDS)

What it is
Created in 1968, the Centre for Sustainable Development (CDS) is a permanent unit at UnB. Since 1996, the CDS has been dedicated to teaching, research and extension, and maintains a Graduate Program in Sustainable Development (PPG-CDS). The PPG-CDS has received a rating of 5, the highest rating of all the certified interdisciplinary graduate programs in Brazil, given by the Coordinating Body for the Further Education of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). The PPG-CDS offers three courses – a doctorate, an academic Master’s Degree and a professionalizing Master’s Degree.
CDS has a faculty of about 50 professors and researchers with varying educational backgrounds, all with PhDs. They participate in several research, teaching and technical-scientific advisory networks.
At UnB, CDS studies and fulfills interdisciplinary research on the environment and the society, focusing on seven major lines of research:
1 – Public policy, governance and socioenvironmental conflict
2 – Energy, residues and climate change
3 – Environmental education
4 – Science, technology and innovation
5 – Territorial management, land use and protected areas
6 – Living conditions and the environment
7 – Environmental and business economy

Centre of Excellence in Tourism (CET)

What it is
The UnB Centre of Excellence in Tourism (CET) does teaching, research and extension work in the promotion of tourism, gastronomy and hotel management. Tied directly to the President’s Office, the CET plans and orientates strategic actions for developing the productive chain of tourism. The centre offers graduate and extension courses designed to meet the needs of the labour market.

What it is
The Integrated Centre for Land Management (CIORD) created in December 1995, focuses on interdisciplinary work in the field of land management, collaborating with colleges, institutes, departments and centres at UnB, as well as other Brazilian and international universities, government bodies, NGOs and companies.
Objectives:
I – to help refine the methodology guidelines and operational procedures for Brazilian land management and bring them into line with specific regional and local characteristics;
II – to pursue a technical approach to regional planning and management and related areas;
III – to promote the publicizing of information and exchange of experience related to land management among states and nations;
IV – to cooperate with training programs and human resources training in land management and related areas;
V – to offer extension and graduate courses in land management and related areas, incorporating fundamental aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

What it is
The Centre for Research and Graduate Study of the Americas (CEPPAC) was created in 1987 via an agreement between UnB and the Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO). It was FLACSO’s first doctoral program in Brazil and focuses on comparative studies regarding Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, the centre is tied to UnB’s Department of Social Sciences and hosts the Graduate Program in Comparative Studies of the Americas.

What it is
The Reference Centre for Nature Conservation and Recovery of Degraded Areas (CRAD) is a multidisciplinary centre within UnB. Its goals are:
1) to scientifically promote and publish studies and research in nature conservation and recovery of degraded areas, as well as extension activities;
2) to develop models to demonstrate recovery and carry out projects on topics related to these areas of knowledge;
3) to encourage the continuing scientific upgrading of professionals in the areas of nature conservation and recovery of degraded areas, providing inputs to their activities in the areas of extension and environmental education;
4) to make a contribution to research and instructional improvement at all levels, including undergraduate, graduate, vocational and specialization education, and training of rural producers, workshops, seminars, symposiums, conferences, congresses, round table discussions, meetings, extension courses, and internships (including post-doctoral) related to nature conservation and recovery of degraded areas;
5) to further the continuing scientific education of its members;
6) to research and provide domestic and international consultations and services in its fields.

What it is
Founded on May 10, 2007, the Research Centre for Information Architecture (CPAI), in conjunction with the School of Administration, Accounting and Economics (FACE) at the University of Brasilia, comprises PhDs with and without post-doctoral studies, holders of Master’s Degrees, doctoral and Master’s candidates, undergraduates engaged in research on the structuring and use of information architecture.

The CPAI is a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional centre involved in research, development and innovation in information technology and science, emphasizing information architecture. It pursues the following lines of investigation, within three broad areas of research:

1. Epistemology
• the nature of the datum, information and knowledge;
• studies of the adoption of phenomenology;
• the theory of knowledge: phenomenology;
• classical and non-classical logic
• theories of logical programming;
• new models for applied modal logics;

2. Science

• methods of applied architecture of information – MAIA;

• organizational normative chain;

• theories and methods of strategic organizational planning;

What it is
CERME was created in October 1997. The Centre of Studies in Market Regulation, along with the regulatory agencies in the electrical power field, had called attention to the need for research and the creation of courses for building in the area of regulation. Consequently, an agreement was signed between the University of Brasilia and the Ministry of Mines and Energy. In 2001, CERME offered its first course as a professional Master’s Degree program: The Economics of Regulation and Defense of Competition (REDE). In 2006, CERME and CIEF established a partnership combining their areas of expertise to offer a professional Master’s Degree in Regulation and Business Management (REGEN).

What it is
CIEF started up in 2002, joining the best professionals and researchers in the area of finance for a professional Master’s Degree in the Economic Management of Business (MP-GEN). In 2006, CERME and CIEF formed a partnership, combining their areas of expertise to offer a professional Master’s Degree in Regulation and Business Management (REGEN).
